This is just a short rant, nothing as deep as the other blogs I have posted.
Ever since elementary school I have been accused of lying about my lastname. It's a Spanish lastname, so after role call I would have Mestizo children come up and say to me, "You don't look Mexican". Living in California, I was somehow led to believe that my Mexican counterparts and I shared a common "bond". As soon as a Spanish name is uttered, visions of brown skinned, 5 foot, black haired brown eyed Mestizos come to mind!
More recently I took the time to look up what my lastname meant. And it surely is a very noble Spaniard lastname that the Mexicans have defiled with their Aztec-Incan-Whatever mixes. So damn it! I'm taking it back! I'm tired of looking in phonebooks at the infinite people with the lastname of Garcia or Hernandez and knowing that they have brought a legacy of surnames to their knees.
Through my hard work and loyalty to my people, I will bring back the dignity of my surname and spread it to my proud children!
