Thomas guilty on 38 counts: Jury to consider punishment today in death penalty case

The same jury that deemed George Thomas criminally responsible for the January 2007 slayings of a Knox County couple today will return to decide his fate.

The seven-woman, five-man jury from Hamilton County took less than seven hours to return a sweeping set of guilty verdicts Tuesday against Thomas for the litany of crimes committed against Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23.


Those convictions included first-degree murder, felony murder, robbery, kidnapping and rape.

Thomas, 26, showed no reaction to the 38 guilty verdicts. His defenders, Tom Dillard and Steve Johnson, left the courtroom without comment as the families of the slain couple hugged law enforcers, including lead Knoxville Police Department Investigator Todd Childress, and prosecutors Leland Price and Takisha Fitzgerald.




The defenders for a torture-slaying suspect facing a second trial on the same set of facts are looking to hindsight to give them a crystal clear vision for what should be kept out this go-round.

Defense attorneys Tom Dillard and Stephen Ross Johnson have filed motions in Knox County Criminal Court seeking to bar Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Darinka Mileusnic-Polchan from testifying and to prohibit prosecutors Leland Price and TaKisha Fitzgerald from making the same arguments used in the first trial of slaying suspect George Thomas.

Thomas was tried in December 2009 for the January 2007 kidnapping, rape and slayings of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23. A jury whose members hailed from Hamilton County convicted him as a principal player in the crimes but rejected death as punishment.

Two years later, the judge who presided over that trial — Richard Baumgartner — became mired in his own criminal woes involving an addiction to opiate painkillers and a state court conviction of official misconduct for buying pills from a felon on probation in his court. Last year, a federal jury found him guilty of lying about the drug trafficking of his mistress, a graduate of the Drug Court program that he helped found. WORST BILL OF WEEK–AB 1266–Democrat Bill to Allow Boys in Gov’t School Girls Showers, Bathrooms and on Girls Team—and Vice Versa

If San Fran Assemblyman Ammiano has his way buys who think they are girls will be allowed to use the girls showers, bathrooms and join the girls basketball team. Girls who think they are boys will be allowed the reverse.

Do you think an eleven year old girl wants to have a twelve year old boy in the showers with her? Do you think boys would enjoy having a fifteen year old girl taking a shower with them?

San Fran is a sick city. Now they want their “openness” to go to your town. The good news is that passing this law will assure many more boys and girls going to private education facilities instead of government social experiments. Would you send your child to this Democrat dream school?

State ordering girls’ locker rooms open to boys

The California State Assembly passed a bill Thursday mandating schools permit boys to play on girls’ athletic teams and utilize the ladies’ locker room if they gender identify as girls – or vice-versa for girls identifying as boys.

The bill’s author, openly homosexual San Francisco Democrat Tom Ammiano, has been an activist for lesbian, “gay,” bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, issues for decades and reportedly became in 1975 the first San Francisco public school teacher to make his homosexuality public.

Ammiano told the Los Angeles Times some parents may be uncomfortable with their children sharing bathrooms with students of a different sex, but he said, “It’s also important to protect our children from prejudice.”

“There’s no trampling of other people’s rights,” he said. “There’s a recognition that other people have the same rights that you do.”

Ammiano cited the case of Eli Erlick, a high school student in Mendocino County who was born male but identifies as female. Ammiano said Erlick was prohibited from participating in girls’ gym classes while in middle school and noted that Erlick’s parents testified in favor of the bill.

By a vote of 46-25, carried without any affirmative votes from Republican lawmakers, the California Assembly passed the bill, AB 1266, which amends Section 221.5 of the state’s Education Code as follows: “A pupil shall be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.”

The bill would affect not only interscholastic sports, but also sex-segregated physical education classes.

An analysis of the bill quoted Ammiano: “When transgender students are denied the opportunity to participate in physical education classes in a manner consistent with their gender identity, they miss out on … important benefits and suffer from stigmatization and isolation.”Read more

Alright before you all start calling me closed minded, a bigot, ignorant or whatever choice word you care to throw at me. Listen I have had communication with many gays and transwhatever through out my life, through a job I was working in high school, to having a person I called my best friend when growing up in Elementary/Middle School until she moved away. Fastforward 20 something years and we got back in contact with one another which was great; I later found out she owned a business, which happened to be a nightclub/bar and it wound up being similar to a 'Bird Cage' kind of establishment with the shows and stuff. I have no idea if it is still there, but her and I lost touch with each other again. i guess you'd say we grew apart with things we had in common as teenagers, which wasn't a whole lot anymore. Due to life events. 'our own tragic tales while growing up' etc., but this is completely insane and wrong as anything.

Why should young girls/teens who are already put in an uncomfortable situation for some girls a complete nightmare of having to change in front of a boy who thinks he's a girl? Tell me are these transgenders still anatomically correct with penis still intact, are they taking hormones to grow Boobs? Or are these transwhatevers just dressing up in womans clothing? HOMESCHOOL and Why is it only girls lockerrooms and boys not having to have transgnder chicks or whatever you want to call them in guys locker rooms? What are their Penises not to be seen? I have a bunch more thoughts on this that i can't or won't say.....but WTF is wrong with this country.

ACLU made sure transgender teen thing allowed to attend prom in women’s clothing in TX.

A transgender teen will be able to attend prom at Spring High School dressed as a woman after an assistant principal originally told the teen she must dress as a boy.

Tony Zamazal wanted to wear dress and heels to prom along with makeup and a wig because he feels more comfortable dressing as a woman. He was told in February that he must wear men’s attire because of the prom’s dress code. When he took his complaint to the principal, he was told the school board would have to weigh in.
The school has now reversed its decision in a letter to the American Civil Liberties Union, explaining that its position was unconstitutional.

“All I wanted was to get to wear a dress to prom, because I wouldn’t have felt comfortable at all showing up in a tux,” Zamazal said. “I’m so grateful that my school has agreed to let me be myself on such an important night.”

The ACLU sent a letter to the principal on March 18, explaining that both federal law and the Constitution protect Zamazal’s right to wear a dress to prom. The district responded last week that they’d allow him to come to prom dressed as he pleases. MORE


Transgender woman Rohit Singh was at a Saskatoon, Sask. bridal shop, Jenny’s Bridal Boutique, when the owner refused to let her try on gowns, insisting it made other customers uncomfortable, CBC reports.

“She said, sorry we don’t allow men to wear dresses here,” Singh says of the store owner. “I said I’m not a man, I’m transgender.”

Singh, who says she has started the process of a sex change, was planning her wedding which took place this past Monday.

“To me it doesn’t matter,” the unidentified owner says. ”He looked like a man. There was quite a few brides in the store. If you see a man trying on dresses, you’re going to feel uncomfortable.”

She later found a bridal gown at another local bridal shop where she describes the service as excellent.

In March, Canada’s House of Commons passed a bill making it a hate crime to discriminate against transgender people. The bill now needs to be passed through the Senate for a second reading.

“Transgender and transsexual citizens are among the most marginalized and are too often victims of harassment and acts of violence,” said New Democrat Randall Garrison at the time.

Transgender teen told he can’t run for prom king, only prom queen

“I’ve always known I was different. I knew I wasn’t like the other kids,” says 18-year-old Isaak Wolfe of Red Lion Senior High School in Pennsylvania.

Wolfe identifies as a male, but was born a female. And when he discovered that after campaigning to run for prom king he was listed by school officials to run as prom queen instead, he was notably upset, reports York Daily Record.

His female birth name, Sierra Stambaugh, was put on the prom queen list.
“For a transgendered person, it is degrading to have that, and I wasn’t even warned,” says Wolfe, who claims he got permission in advance from the prom committee to run as prom king.

After speaking with a guidance counsellor he was told it was principal Mark Shue who made the decision to switch Wolfe’s name and role.
“I wish he made a more progressive decision,” Wolfe’s father, William Stambaugh, tells York Daily Record.

Wolfe has now contacted the American Civil Liberties Union, but says he wishes no ill will on Shue or the school district.

“I would like an apology, at a minimum,”Wolfe says. “I wasn’t given a fair opportunity. I mean, if I don’t win, I don’t win … but I’m not a queen.”

Funny she doesn’t think the countless other ‘ethnic groups’ are just fine and dandy and there are tons of them I’ve found. Where is the Irish Student Union, or German Student Union. Heaven forbid, a lone White group celebrating their European hertiage would want to carry on nighttime patrols to stop innocent students from becoming victims of crime. Keep doing what your doing WSU!

By allowing this group to use university facilities, Towson is basically supporting it. Towson is a public university using public monies to survive. If I understand correctly – any institution as this should not be allowed to receive federal/state money if they support hate groups such as this.

Founded last year, the White Student Union has stirred significant controversy already. The organization has been labeled a hate groupby the Southern Poverty Law Center. In addition, its founder, Matthew Heimbach (who goes by the title “Commander Heimbach”), and fellow organizer Scott Terry interrupted a minority outreach panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference this month in order to defend slavery, noting that slaveholders provided blacks with food and shelter. Terry later told ThinkProgress that African-Americans “should be allowed to vote in Africa” and he’d be “fine” living in a society where blacks are permanently subservient to whites.

The controversial White Student Union has resurfaced on Towson’s campus with plans to conduct random nighttime patrols, which members say are for students’ protection.

Some members of the group, equipped with flashlights, will conduct on-campus safety walks, and female members will carry pepper spray in an attempt to protect students from various crimes like sexual assaults and robberies, WSU President Matthew Heimbach said. <...>

Heimbach said female members have also been enrolling in self-defense classes, and members have been going to local gun ranges as a group, but not in a “military way,” Heimbach said.

He said group members would carry no weapons on the nighttime walks.
One need look no further than the White Student Union’s blog to see why their vigilante operations could turn problematic. In a blog post last month entitled “Black Crime Wave Continues!“, the group writes:
