The man who sexually assaulted a patient at a Mount Pleasant hospice center last year, is ruled guilty but mentally ill. Calvin Williams waved a jury trial then a judge determined his guilt and handed down the sentence.
9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson who has prosecuted many crimes over the years says this is obviously one of most heinous. The victim is robbed of their right to die with dignity. The man responsible for the sexual assault is sentenced to several years behind bars.
A family member who spoke in court today did not want to be on camera but said the victim, who was in her 80's at the time, knew what was happening and that the family has been living a nightmare since the attack. Solicitor Wilson talked about the case after Thursday’s sentencing.
“For a woman to be violated in that way on her death bed but still when she is aware is hard to deal with.”
The trial held in downtown Charleston was to determine if Calvin Williams is competent for trial. Judge Markley Dennis ruled he is competent for court and determined to be guilty he was sentenced to 30-years in prison for an unthinkable crime.
Calvin Williams who lived on the streets entered the Hospice of Charleston in Mount Pleasant in 2011 and sexually assaulted the cancer stricken victim. Evidence was presented on Thursday that told the story of how Williams saw the victim through a window; he managed to make his way inside to her room where the assault took place. The victim died a few days later.
Because of the nature of this crime prosecutors were not worried about getting conviction and Williams’ defense had little to offer-- other than that Williams is a product of the state’s weak efforts to help those who are mentally unstable. He fell through the wide cracks of the system and ended up in that room back in February of 2011. It’s a reality Solicitor Wilson knows very well.
“The defense attorney made reference to it, I made reference to it. We know that there are similar people, with similar history, with similar conditions as the defendant who are out there. Our mental health system is just not equipped to handle it.”

Chili, N.Y.- The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman accused of shoplifting from K-Mart in Chili and then biting an employee.
Police say on June 20, a K-Mart Loss Prevention employee attempted to stop a woman stealing perfume, clothing and a watch.
Police say the suspect, Cheryl Burrell was compliant at first, but then began to resist.
Police say Burrell flailed and bit the loss prevention employee on the stomach.
Authorities say Burrell eventually calmed down before a deputy arrived and took her in to custody.
She is charged with third-degree robbery and attempted assault.
