Family and friends mourned Tuesday as investigators continued searching for answers in the shooting death of a 17-year-old A.L. Brown High School student.

Dozens of friends gathered around the school rock Tuesday morning to honor the memory of Daniel Lee Cooper, who was shot in the neck Monday afternoon while a passenger in a car on Snow Street.

Kannapolis Police investigators have obtained a murder warrant for Darius Jamal Smotherson, who they believe to be one of three involved in the shooting. He had not been arrested Tuesday evening.

The shooting took place around 3 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of Snow Street in north Kannapolis, police said. Emergency crews found Cooper in a white Honda Prelude less than half a mile away on West 22nd Street.

Cooper was taken by ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord, where he later died.

The name of the person driving the Honda has not been released.

Cooper’s mother, Laura Tucker, said her son would have celebrated his 18th birthday on Saturday.

“I’m at a loss for words,” she said Tuesday. “He was getting ready to graduate in a few weeks.”

Tucker declined to comment further but said she hopes anyone with information about the murder calls 911.

The three men believed to be involved in the shooting were last seen running away from Snow Street, officers said. Police tape was tied along the roadside near a walking path Tuesday.

Smotherson, 19, has a last known address on Glendale Avenue, police said.

The second suspect is described as a black male in his early to mid-20s, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing 130 to 150 pounds. He has a bald head and short goatee. He was wearing a white T-shirt with a design on it.

The third suspect is described as a black male in his early to mid-20s, also about 6 feet tall and 130 to 150 pounds. A witness was not able to describe his clothing.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Two employees injured when a disgruntled man broke into WIBW-TV, 631 SW Commerce Place, at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday were out of the hospital Wednesday night.

In surveillance video, the man, identified as Ray Miles, is seen punching two employees. Those workers and two others tackle him. They appear to have him subdued when sales manager Roger Brokke starts to sit up and other workers join the pile - that's the moment Brokke feels himself being stabbed and sees the man has somehow taken out a knife.

Before the violent outburst, the man was allowed into the front lobby and receptionist Lynda Janes called News Director Jon Janes to talk with him. The man, identified as Ray Miles, told Janes he was upset by the way the VA was handling his case. Janes explained to the man that he needs to discuss the issue with the VA and that WIBW couldn't help him at this time.

Miles left the building, but returned about 10 minutes later and became agitated when Lynda Janes and Rob Peppers refused to let him in. When he saw Peppers pick up the phone to call police, the man pushed aside a sofa in the entryway, unplugged a lamp and smashed the glass front doors with it. He then reached through to open the door.

Lynda and Rob ran ahead of him toward the newsroom to warn other employees. Rob stopped in the master control area with the intent of issuing a page, while Lynda alerted newsroom employees, who evacuated to the rear garage area.

"He told me to hit him," said Dylan Schoonover, an employee who saw the man coming down a hallway near the newsroom edit bays. Schoonover slid out a side door unharmed and convened with other staff outside.

Master Control Operator Joe Garrett saw the man walk down a hallway after Lynda ran by alerting everyone to the situation.

"As I turned and came back into master control to call the 911 operator, I saw an African-American male, roughly 5'8", walk by master control with a black and green backpack slung over his shoulder," Garrett said.

A few moments later, Garrett watched on the security camera -still on the phone with 911- as several employees tackled the man near an east exit of the building.

Miles had made it to the newsroom, then turned around and started back toward the front of the building, encountering news director Jon Janes along the way. Miles shoved Janes into a wall, knocking him down. Brokke witnessed what happened and tried to stop Miles, but Miles punched him in the head. Chief Engineer Cary Lahnum and sales associate Greg Palmer then attempted to tackle Miles, with Brokke and Janes joining in.

The man was heard yelling, "I'm going to f**kin' kill you all!" during the struggle. The foursome appeared to have Miles subdued when Brokke, who had already been bitten three times in the back, felt a pain in his hip. He says he looked down to see a knife going into his leg and alerted his coworkers. Four other employees who had arrived in the hallway then joined in holding Miles down and trying to kick the knife out of his hand.

Brokke and Palmer both suffered cuts and were taken by ambulance to Topeka hospitals. Lahnum suffered a black eye and Janes also had bruises, but they did not seek medical treatment.

The employees held the suspect down until police arrived. Miles was taken to the hospital for treatment and booked in the Shawnee County Jail Wednesday afternoon. He's being held on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, aggravated criminal threat resulting in terror or evacuation, aggravated burglary, criminal damage and aggravated battery.

Jon Janes says he has spoken with Miles once before, on March 22, when he came to the station to see about having a story done on the VA mistreating him. Janes also sent him away at that time and Miles became angry and left.

Miles is described as a homeless veteran. He was convicted in 2007 of obstruction and received a suspended jail sentence in 2010 for assault on a law enforcement officer.

MONROEVILLE, Pa. -

Police say a woman who's suspected of stealing store merchandise in Monroeville Mall was seen on video hitting a young employee.

Monroeville police say the woman shoplifted at Hollister on Thursday and started punching and kicking a teenage worker who approached her.

"Certainly, it looks pretty shocking on the video," Police Chief Doug Cole said. "The young lady was being assaulted, as you can see, struck and kicked. That's at least a simple assault."

Police said the woman will likely also be charged with robbery after she is identified and caught.

DENVER, Colorado (KUSA) - Police are investigating a vicious beating at a McDonald's drive-thru in Denver.

Shannon, who asked us not to use her last name, was the victim of an attack on May 9 just before noon.

She called our sister station KUSA 9News, and asked for help finding her attackers.

"I don't feel safe anymore," Shannon said.

The attack happened in the middle of the busy lunch hour at the McDonald's on 3300 Colorado Boulevard near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Radio reference recorded dispatchers describing the attack, as multiple 911 calls came in.

"Two black females are inside. They're fighting inside the car still in the drive-thru," one dispatcher can be heard saying.

Shannon has been coming to the same drive-thru almost every day for five years without a problem... until this incident.

"I witnessed this young lady throwing trash out of her car and all I said was that it wasn't cool," Shannon said.

A few choice words later, Shannon thought the argument was over.

"All of a sudden I was being attacked," Shannon said.

Two women jumped out of the car in front of her.

"She was right in my window just punching me in my face, pulling my hair," Shannon said. "She started biting on my hands so severely. I thought she was gonna bite 'em off, actually."

Then a man jumped out of the car and threw a soda through her window.

"He said, 'This is for you, you white b----. This is a grape soda.' And then they took off," Shannon said.

The attack happened in plain view of a rooftop security camera, but Denver Police told Shannon the actual beating wasn't caught on tape.

Investigators won't release the security video, calling this an "open investigation."

McDonald's management has no comment, but say it is cooperating with police.

"If they can do that, they can snap and do something else. Something worse," Shannon said.

Shannon hopes police find whoever beat her up before they do it again.

"I don't want anybody else to get hurt like I got hurt," Shannon said.

The description of the suspects - two black women and one black man - is vague. The best clue police have to go on right now is they were driving a light-blue Cadillac with temporary tags.

Two Toronto women visiting Atlantic City were stabbed to death Monday in what police believe was a botched attempted robbery.

According to pressofAtlanticCity, police officer Jacob Abbruscato witnessed the unprovoked attack against the Canadian women and drew his weapon in a bid to stop the bloody assault.

The victims, aged 47 and 80, were alive when an ambulance arrived about 10 a.m., but died from their wounds in the afternoon at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus.

Both women, from Scarborough, had been stabbed several times in the upper body.

Abbruscato ordered the assailant to drop her weapon in the random daylight attack, which she did before being apprehended on Pacific Avenue, near Bally’s Casino.

WPVI TV reported that the accused was trying to take a purse from one of the victims before the fatal knifings.

Antoinette E. Pelzer, 44, of Philadelphia, is charged with aggravated assault, and weapons and robbery offences.

She remains in custody and charges are expected to be upgraded.

The accused woman’s mother has told some media her daughter suffered from schizophrenia and was likely off her medication.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

The National Field Marshal for the New Black Panther Party (NBPP), King Samir Shabazz, engaged in multiple vicious tirades on his national radio show this weekend, calling for broad violence against whites.

Shabazz, you may remember, made national news in 2008 when the Department of Justice brought a voter intimidation suit against him and a NBPP accomplice. They got in trouble for wearing Black Panther uniforms and brandishing a police-style baton outside a Philadelphia precinct during the Presidential election. Shabazz was charged on the grounds of violations to the Voting Rights Act.

But on May 29, 2009, against the advice of prosecutors who had worked on the case, the Department of Justice ordered the suit dropped, even though Shabazz and the other defendants in the case refused to appear in federal court.
