A former metro-east football star was charged with aggravated battery, a class 3 felony, Thursday by the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office following an incident at Best Buy in Fairview Heights.

According to police, Hickey D. Thompson, who earned a mention in Sports Illustrated as the star of Althoff Catholic High School's football teams that won back-to-back state championships in 1989 and 1990, allegedly hit a Best Buy employee in the face during an altercation at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday. The employee was identified in court records as Gary Thompson.

Hickey Thompson's companion, Latoya N. Greenwood, an East St. Louis councilwoman, was issued a ticket for disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor. Greenwood works at East St. Louis School District 189.

When police officers arrived on scene, they learned two customers had been asked for a receipt as they approached the store exit with merchandise purchased in the store at a location other than the front checkout lanes. Best Buy store policy requires a loss prevention officer check for receipts near the exit if customers do not pay for merchandise at the front of the store.

The female customer identified by police as Greenwood, 38, of East St. Louis became angry and began to yell obscenities at the 61-year-old Best Buy loss prevention officer who requested their receipt.

According to police, witnesses stated that as Greenwood continued to yell, Hickey Thompson struck the employee in the face with his open hand causing him to fall to the ground.

Both Hickey Thompson and Greenwood were arrested and transported to the Fairview Heights Police Department.

Hickey Thompson is being held in St. Clair County Jail. His bail was set at $20,000. If convicted, he faces two to five years in prison.

Greenwood was given a court date and released from custody. If convicted, she faces up to 30 days in prison and a fine up to $1,500.

Employee Gary Thompson was treated at the scene for minor injuries and declined to be transported to the hospital.

A hacker group, connected with Anonymous, announced Sunday that it has extensive information on people said to have been involved in the gang rape of a 15-year-old Ohio girl. Local parents and authorities are accused of protecting the rapists.

The brutal assault was the subject of a New York Times profile, which described how local superstar high school football players Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond are charged with the rape and kidnap of the girl in Steubenville, Ohio. But most accounts claim that the two were not the only ones involved.

"The town of Steubenville has been good at keeping this quiet and their star football team protected," reads the statement from the Anonymous-affiliated group, which refers to itself as KnightSec.

As part of "Operation Roll Red Roll," KnightSec claims to have obtained extensive information on "everyone involved including names, social security numbers, addresses, relatives, and phone numbers." The group says that adults in the football-crazed town are protecting the group of boys involved, which other students at the Big Red High School say refers to itself as the "rape crew."

In addition to the sexual attack, those involved also took photos of the unconscious girl and are said to have dragged her from party to party.

KnightSec also released "preliminary" information about the members of the "rape crew," calling it a "warning shot to the school faculty, the parents of those involved, and those involved especially." The information already posted includes names, addresses, phone numbers, and names of parents of those alleged to have been involved in the gang rape. It's preceded by a list of the thirteen accused rapists, and threatens to expose more people if those involved to do publicly apologize "in the next few days."

"You now have the world looking directly at you," the statement reads.

A note included with a video reading of the statement says that Harold Malone, who was included in the list, has since proven himself innocent and as such is not a target of Operation Roll Red Roll.

ST. LOUIS--The man St. Louis police believe robbed and shot a University of Toledo medical student Wednesday morning was arrested today.

Arrested on charges of robbery and assault was Vincent Newman, 24, of St. Louis, police said.

The suspect is believed to have robbed and shot three people in the last 11 days, including Halley Briglia, a fourth-year student at UT who is in St. Louis for a clinical clerkship. The suspect has only been charged with one of the three incidents.

Additional charges are pending.

"We're confident this is the same perpetrator," said St. Louis police spokesman David Marzullo.

Mr. Marzullo said police were able to connect the suspect to the three shootings by comparing shell casings recovered at the three crime scenes.

The suspect is charged with an Oct. 16 robbery and shooting in which a 20-year-old woman was robbed of electronics and then shot in her left arm and left cheek.

A hospital spokesman at St. Louis University Hospital said they had no information about Ms. Briglia's condition, but earlier today was reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Dr. Jeffrey Gold, chancellor and vice president for biosciences and health affairs at the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly the Medical College of Ohio, flew to St. Louis Wednesday night to be with the woman and her family, he said.

The St. Louis Police Department could not be immediately reached, but a report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch states that Ms. Briglia was shot at about 5:55 a.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of South Spring Avenue, which is near Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center.

Ms. Briglia was walking to her car when she was approached by a man who robbed and then shot her, the newspaper reports. Police in St. Louis have linked the suspect, who has not been arrested, to two other robberies and shootings in the past 11 days.

“In all these cases, the victims cooperated and they were still shot,” St. Louis police Lt. Col. Lawrence O'Toole told the Post-Dispatch.

Dr. Gold said Ms. Briglia is on a ventilator and in an intensive care unit.

Details of the crime were not immediately available, but initial reports suggest that Ms. Briglia was shot in the hand, but the bullet then struck her in the neck.

Dr. Gold said he will return to Toledo tonight, and that an associate dean will fly to St. Louis to be with Ms. Briglia and her family for the weekend. Visits to St. Louis will continue in shifts as necessary, Dr. Gold said.

“This is a huge thing for us,” Dr. Gold said. “It's a senseless tragedy.”

Dr. Gold said a notice would be sent out today to students and faculty about the shooting.

Ms. Briglia, originally from Erie, Penn., is an honors student, Dr. Gold said. She earned an undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University before coming to the University of Toledo for medical school.

“She's just an incredibly bright, energetic young woman who has always been in a leadership position,” Dr. Gold said. “She's always at the top of her class. She's just an amazing young woman with a tremendously bright career ahead of her.”

Video Game Store Employee dressed as Super Mario Assaulted

An employee at TNT Games was dressed in costume as the video game character Super Mario. The employee was advertising for the store on the corner of Perryville and State Street.

Around 12:30 P.M. Sunday two black males got out of a black SUV and assaulted the employee. Reports indicate that one male assaulted the victim while the other had a phone out. Police aren't sure if the suspect video taped the incident. The store employee sustained minor injuries.

The owner of TNT Games Steve Allen says he's shocked, "I can't believe it I own two other stores and we never experienced anything like this. This is random unprovoked violence. I don't know, I don't know."

Police are still looking for the suspects. If anyone has any information they're urged to call police.
