The reason why films from the time period are silent is because there was no magnetic recording back then, at least not mainstream.
They recored stuff in wax I think..., then made a vinyl recored of it which served as the audio track.
Most doc's you'll see out there have fake audio, sound effects added in way after it was recored on film.
